Deferiet receives $622,000 in federal funding for water management

DEFERIET — The village was awarded $622,000 in grant funding Tuesday to support an expansion of its water management resources.

The funding will be used to provide a new transmission line between the village and nearby Herrings and to make distribution system improvements in both villages, including the addition of several fire hydrants, new well pumps and a 225-gallon elevated storage tank.

The funding is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program.

The funding was announced in a combined press release from U.S. Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand.

“Supporting New York’s rural communities with smart investments for water management is pivotal for communities like the village of Deferiet and its local economy. It improves water management, safeguards public health and spurs economic development,” Sen. Schumer said in the release. He said the funding would “enhance quality of life in the community and lead the way for further economic development in the region.”

Sen. Gillibrand said in a statement that water investments like the one announced Tuesday are “one of the smartest and most effective ways to lead us to new economic growth.”

“Upgrading water infrastructure can help local families live healthier, while helping to attract new businesses and support jobs to strengthen the local economy,” she said. “And when these investments are made at the federal level like this, that helps hold the line on property taxes.”

The USDA’s Rural Development mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents.
