CLAYTON — Susan J. Farmer, executive director of the Clayton Improvement Association, has been fired by the nonprofit’s board of directors.

Michael P. Bristol, vice president of the association board, said the directors felt that the organization “wasn’t moving in the direction they felt it should be moving.” He declined to elaborate further.

“The board just felt like we needed a new direction,” he said. “It just wasn’t working out.”

Ms. Farmer said she also cannot elaborate on the circumstances of her termination because there is a legal case pending — a complaint that will be submitted to the state Division of Human Rights by the end of the month.

She was hired in 2006 to succeed Matthew A. Taylor, who now works for the Development Authority of the North Country.

Established in 1977, the association has the mission of providing housing for low- to moderate-income families and participating in community renewal projects in the towns of Alexandria, Antwerp, Cape Vincent, Clayton, LeRay, Orleans, Pamelia, Philadelphia, Theresa and Wilna.

A Watertown native, Ms. Farmer worked for the Thousand Islands Girl Scout Council Inc. as its fund development director before joining the Clayton Improvement Association.

Mr. Bristol said the association board hopes to hire a new executive director in July through a “regional search.”
