WADDINGTON – Area high school students will have an opportunity to learn how to fish from the pros when they visit the north country in August.
The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society will host free classes on Aug. 10 for area high school students interested in bass fishing techniques.
Well accept as many students that sign up, Bass Nation Senior Manager Jon M. Stewart said. The more the merrier. We havent had any kids that didnt have fun, and they wont be disappointed.
Students will learn about knot tying, the different types of rods and reels and their applications with different lures, and what it takes to be a pro angler.
We leave it up to the pros to talk about what they want to talk about, Mr. Stewart said. The students will get an opportunity to ask them questions as well.
The classes will include backstage tours of the venue. Students will also have the opportunity to enter drawings to win BASS fishing gear. One lucky winner will get the opportunity to hang out with a pro of their choice during weigh-in. The class will start about 9:30 a.m. and go until weigh-in at 3 or 4 p.m. at the Whitaker Park Boat Launch.
Mr. Stewart said the goal of the program is to foster a love of fishing and to encourage high school students to start their own bass fishing club.
BASS will offer high school clubs a chance to compete in the Bass High School National Championship in 2014.
I would tell them to bring a buddy to the classes, Mr. Stewart said. We will talk about how kids can get their own high school clubs started.
To sign up, contact Mr. Stewart at firstname.lastname@example.org or (205)313-0900 by Aug. 2.
St. Lawrence County FishCap Coordinator Donald R. Meissner, who observed the high school program in action in Orange, Texas, said groups of students will have an opportunity to bond with the anglers.
Its a wonderful project, Mr. Meissner said. Its really a unique, multifaceted and multidimensional program. Its really about the kids. The kids can ask anglers a range of questionsboth personal and professional. A lot of these kids dream of meeting these anglers, and its a great opportunity for them to see whats at the end of the rainbow.
