The $19.1 million construction project at Kennedy Elementary School is on track for a Christmas-time finish and work is progressing quickly.

The Ogdensburg Board of Education toured the project site at Monday’s meeting.

Guided by Glenn Erb, an architect with Bernier, Carr and Associates, Watertown, the board was shown partially completed classrooms, the main office, hallways and what will become the new front entrance.

The new addition will have Blue Devil decorations laid into the hallway floor.

Mr. Erb said the main entrance will have two sets of doors creating an airlock security system.

That way “nobody can just come walking into the school anymore,” Mr. Erb said. “Everybody will have to come this way and be accounted for.”

Superintendent Timothy M. Vernsey said the various commemorative plaques adorning the walls at Lincoln and Sherman schools will be moved to the new entrance at Kennedy once construction is complete.

“So as you walk in you’ll see all the old plaques that were in the older buildings,” he said.

Board Member Vicky M. Peo said the progress looks good.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” she said.

The expanded building will see students from Sherman Elementary School, which is closing this year, and Lincoln Elementary School, which is closing in June 2014, joining the student body there.

Once Lincoln closes, the building will house more than 700 students.

The project at Kennedy is part of a multiyear, $57 million district wide renovation project.
