CLAYTON A new fitness facility that focuses less on conventional weight training and more on whats called functional fitness will open next month just outside the village.
Viking Fitness, across from Heritage Heights at 38465-B Route 12, does not have an official opening date yet, but owner Danielle Oliver Jones a professional massage therapist, personal trainer and now an entrepreneur said she plans to hold an open house in early July.
Along with classes and other services, Viking Fitness will offer functional fitness training, which aims to reduce fatigue and the strains of performing everyday movements rather than strengthening an isolated few muscles.
Basically, functional fitness means less machines and more building up strength and stability, said Mrs. Jones, who has been working out of Northern Physical Therapy & Fitness Center on Riverside Drive before starting her own operation.
Mrs. Jones said planning took less than six months and, with the help of several local small businesses, shes been able to set up the new fitness facility relatively quickly.
Now, the roughly 1,800-square-foot facility just needs a few finishing touches before it can open.
Group and personal training classes and massage therapy will be offered Monday through Friday and Warrior Cardio Kickboxing classes with Matthew Delaney will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Mrs. Jones said she will continue to offer private training and massage therapy at Viking Fitness from 7 to 8 a.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m.
From 8 to 9 a.m., she will hold Silver Fox Strength and Stability classes that will be geared primarily toward people over 50 years old.
A more intensive Young Blood Functional Fitness program will be held from 5 to 6 p.m.
Open gym, or free play, hours will be from 10 a.m. until noon and from 3 until 5 p.m., and patrons may use the facilitys equipment cardio machines, squat and pull-up cages, gymnastic rings, plyometric boxes, medicine balls and foam rollers at their leisure.
Viking Fitness also plans to offer nutrition counseling and body-building classes in the future, Mrs. Jones said.
