Canton runners set marks at national meet

The Canton 3,200-meter relay of Laura Pierce, Gemma and Rebecca DelRossi and Maria Ricalton added to its track and field exploits last weekend eclipsing two Section 10 standards at the New Balance National Outdoor Track-Field Championships at North Carolina A&T University.

The foursome placed seventh in 9 minutes, 10.44 seconds, surpassing the section mark of 9:15.33 that it established at the state championships earlier this month.

Pierce also placed 14th in the 5,000 meters, racing her first 5-kilometer track in 17:25.73.

Gemma DelRossi’s ninth-place finish in the Emerging Elite 800 meters also exceeded the Section 10 mark as she finished in 2:14.15. She ran 2:15.79 at the state meet.

Canton assistant coach Paul Pierce said he was unsure whether the marks would count as Section 10 records as the girls were entered as members of the Canton Track Club.
