Port Leyden teen charged after Leyden river rescue

PORT LEYDEN — A Port Leyden teen was charged Thursday afternoon after two children he was swimming with had to be rescued from the Black River off Davis Bridge Road in the town of Leyden.

Johnathan D. Nellenback, 18, River Road, was charged by Lewis County sheriff’s deputies with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, answerable in Leyden Town Court.

Deputies said Mr. Nellenback was swimming with the children, ages 11 and 12, when the younger pair got caught in the current and swept downriver, where they were able to climb onto a large rock in the middle of the river.

Members of the Port Leyden Fire Department and ambulance squad and the Glenfield swift water rescue squad responded and were able to bring both children to safety without incident.
