DEKALB JUNCTION - The Class of 2013 valedictorian at Hermon-DeKalb Central School reminded her classmates Friday evening of their shared journey as they move onto the next step in their lives.

A total of 27 diplomas were awarded to seniors during ceremonies held in the auditorium.

Sadie L. Smith was named class valedictorian for achieving the highest grade point average during high school while Taylor L. Morrill was named salutatorian for achieving the second highest academic record.

“Whether the next step is college, the workforce, or the military, we’re ready,” Miss Smith said. “An although our futures will take us in all different directions, and in all honesty some of us may never see each other again after tonight, there is no denying the impact of our shared journey.”

She urged her fellow graduates to take the time to thank those who made their journey to graduation possible including teachers, friends and family members.

“As time goes by our memories of high school will fade, but I hope no one here forgets where we came from,” she said.

Miss Morrill told fellow seniors their high school experiences will be with them for the rest of their lives.

“Hermon-DeKalb is our past now. We aren’t going to want to look back at it all of the time, but it will always be there,” she said. “We will use what we’ve learned from Hermon-DeKalb every day, whether it’s math, English or just being able to remember two locker combinations at the same time.”
