EVANS MILLS — Stephaney Miesowitz wants you to travel the world with her in an hour.

That is how the village resident describes the environment of her Zumba classes. She is a testament to the Latin and international fitness music’s success, as she has used it to transform her fitness level and overall health. Her journey was featured recently in PhenoLot, an online magazine about women’s beauty and fitness.

“I continue to share my story so that other women can see that you can do anything if you put your mind to it,” she said. “I let them know that with hard work, dedication and passion for fitness, I am where I am now and that it did not happen overnight.”

Mrs. Miesowitz’s journey has been 3 years in the making, and she’s not close to being finished.

She said she attended her first Zumba class a few years ago after a neighbor on Fort Drum suggested she try it. Not only was she instantly addicted, but she became an instructor soon afterward and has expanded her expertise to include Zumba toning, aqua Zumba, Zumbatonic, Hip-Hop Hustle and P90X.

“What made me want to push myself to get these certifications is because my passion for fitness is where my heart is,” Mrs. Miesowitz said. “I always want to learn more and do more to my body, basically challenging and shocking my body, but as well as teaching/sharing what I do to others. It’s like a fire within me that wants more and more for myself.”

Dozens of her Zumba class participants on the post also keep wanting more.

Lynne Meyer-Johnson has attended Mrs. Miesowitz’s Zumba classes for a year and a half, and was hooked before her first Zumba workout was even over.

“I continue to attend her class because her energy is amazing, and she has a positive upbeat attitude that is contagious,” Ms. Meyer-Johnson said. “The changes in my body shape are proof that her teaching methods are effective. She has taught me several exercise plans to sculpt and maintain my ‘ideal body shape’ and meet my fitness goals. I continue to see positive changes in my body. She has encouraged and motivated me to continue to challenge myself, which in turn has allowed me to be more confident about my body.”

Earlier this year, those classes on the post were cut for budget reasons. After an online petition circulated, classes began again in early June.

Mrs. Miesowitz said her advice to anyone who needs motivation to become more fit is to first unlock your mind, then unlock your body. She said her motivation is her family, Zumba students and God, whom she said is her rock.

“You’ve got to believe in yourself and do it for you and no one else,” Mrs. Miesowitz said. “You’ve got to stop with the excuses and come to the realization that you need to change and love yourself. Once you do all these things, everything else will fall into place. Never give up.”

She said that if she had given up, she’d never be able to reach so many people. One of her biggest surprises was when PhenoLot reached out to her through her fitness page on Facebook. She hadn’t heard of the magazine before, but welcomed the thought of sharing her story to inspire others.

“It makes me feel so blessed that I, an ordinary woman, can inspire others with my story and to let them know they don’t have to be a celebrity to look fit, healthy and strong,” she said.

“They can have the bodies they want if they work hard for it.”
