Former Fort Drum rear commander promoted to major general

FORT DRUM — The post’s former rear detachment commander, now the leader of a National Guard division, was promoted at a ceremony Monday on post.

Brig. Gen. Harry E. Miller was promoted to major general by Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy, the state’s adjutant general. The ceremony was held at the New York State Armory on post because Gen. Miller’s unit, the 42nd Infantry Division, was training there.

Gen. Miller has led the division, also known as the “Rainbow Division,” since April, after being assigned to the role in November.

The unit, which includes approximately 20,000 soldiers from New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New Hampshire, is based in Troy.

Gen. Miller was nominated for the title by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and confirmed by the state Senate on June 17.

A news release from the unit about the promotion said Gen. Miller could not be promoted as a federally recognized general officer without state action.

Gen. Miller served as rear senior commander of Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division from October 2010 to October 2011, when the division headquarters was deployed to Afghanistan.

Gen. Miller also has served as deputy commander of the state Army National Guard, and his active duty career included time with the 1st Armored Division, the 82nd Airborne Division and the 1st Special Forces Group.

He is currently employed as executive director of veterans services for Easter Seals New Hampshire.
