Compulsion with child porn makes Norwood man a lifetime sex offender

CANTON — A Norwood man who was arrested for child pornography was sentenced and designated a sex offender Monday.

Jonathan E. Delosh, 29, of 31 Spring St., was sentenced to 10 years of probation with a restriction that would prevent him from owning a computer, smartphone or any other device that would allow him Internet access.

In a March 29 plea agreement, Delosh pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of one count of attempting to promote a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony. Delosh originally was facing 10 counts of promotion and 10 counts of possession of child pornography.

He was one of three arrested Oct. 16 as a result of a 10-month joint investigation, called Operation Northern Net, by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Homeland Security. Police went undercover on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks to track down those possessing and sharing child pornography.

Once suspects had been identified, police obtained search warrants to confiscate their computers. These searches took place in August.

Delosh’s attorney, Thomas C. Finnerty, asked St. Lawrence County Judge Jerome J. Richards to consider allowing Delosh access to the Internet in controlled environments.

“If Mr. Delosh used his computer to download or access child pornography, for that use alone I would understand,” Mr. Finnerty said. “It places a person too far behind the eight ball in this day and age by prohibiting access to a computer.”

Judge Richards said he wanted to see how Delosh did under probation before making such a decision.

“He watched child pornography on a daily basis, stopped and went back,” Judge Richards said. “There seems to be an issue whether or not he engages in watching such videos.”

In a statement read by District Attorney Nicole M. Duvé, Delosh said he started downloading child pornography at the age of 14, preferred the videos to feature children, male or female, ages 10 to 12 and admitted to engaging in downloading the films because he enjoyed seeing someone else get hurt.

In addition to being designated a Level 2 sex offender, someone with a moderate risk of repeat offense, and being designated an offender for life, he was given fines, fees and surcharges totaling $1,425.
