Morgan to buy, retrofit former Arsenal Street tire center

Morgan Management, Pittsford, is expected this week to close on the purchase of the former Tallmadge Tire and Auto Service Center, 217 Arsenal St., from G&K Realty, owned by D. Edward Grant and Timothy E. Kelly.

Morgan plans to renovate the two-story building before the winter, replacing the roof and removing asbestos, Mr. Kelly said. The building could be used for a variety of purposes by the developer, he said, but plans have not yet been divulged.

“The location is a big thing, and the lot has about 50 parking spaces,” Mr. Kelly said of the building, which has about 12,000 square feet of space.

Kevin J. Morgan, the developer’s vice president, did not return a call Tuesday.

The ensuing purchase comes after COR Development Co., Fayetteville, bought the neighboring Mercy Care Center in April after residents relocated to the new Samaritan Summit Village on outer Washington Street.

COR, a large developer like Morgan, will demolish the Mercy complex and build residential, retail and commercial space on the property, between Arsenal and Stone streets.

Mr. Kelly operated Tallmadge Tire and Auto Service Center there from 1992 until his retirement in 2001. The building has since been vacant, although the county has rented parking space there.

Before it became a tire store, the building was a fire station used by the city of Watertown.
