SU’s Grant unable to play for Team USA in U19 worlds

Syracuse University’s Jerami Grant has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and will not be able to play for the Team USA in the upcoming FIBA U19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic.

Pittsburgh’s James Robinson will replace Grant on the USA 12-man roster.

The USA U19 team is in Prague, preparing for the World Championships, which are slated to start Thursday and run through July 7. The U.S. opens preliminary play Thursday versus Ivory Coast, and then faces China on Friday and Russia on Saturday.

“I’m disappointed and feel bad for Jerami,” USA head coach Billy Donovan of Florida said. “Unfortunately, even since the tryouts he just never seemed himself. It seemed like he was ailing — he had a sore throat — then it was strep throat and nothing really helped. We even got him on penicillin and we took him for some blood work and it came back mono. I feel bad for him, one, because he can’t play. Two, we’re already here and it’s one of those things you wish for him that we could have found this out in Colorado, but obviously there was no way of knowing that.’’
