Madrid Bluegrass Ramble needs new directors

MADRID - Seventeen years ago, Mike and Kathy Crowe, Keri Cooper and Tony Cooper and Dan Dominie encountered very few stumbling blocks founding the Madrid Bluegrass Ramble.

“I was Madrid’s Town Attorney and the running group that I belonged to really loved running in the Madrid area because it was so beautiful. Dan Dominie was looking to start a half-marathon in the county with a certified course and we found a great loop for the course,” recalled Crowe.

“Keri Cooper thought it would be great to have a run with the Madrid Bluegrass Festival so she approached her uncle, Bud Rupert, who ran the festival.”

Approaching the late Bud Rupert was always an ideal way to get things done in Madrid for many years.

“Bud put together the infastructure - water, ice, fire department and police, traffic control, porta johns and anything else we needed,” said Crowe. “All we had to do was show up and run the races.”

Aided by a corps of dedicated volunteers like Larry LaMere, who directs a crew at the finish line, the organizing committe developed The Madrid Bluegrass Ramble into a very unique and very popular event which offers 5K, 10K and 21K (half marathon) races.

But an event which now needs new leadership because the organizing committee all plan to step aside after Saturday’s ramble.

“We need someone to step up and run it for the ramble to continue,” said Crowe, who feels that continuing it will a smooth transition. “If someone decides to take it over, they won’t have to reinvent the wheel. Everything they need, right down to the tables for the finish line, is there and the event is well-planned.”

“The Town of Madrid sponsors the races and provides the insure which is really a big thing,” he added.

Anyone wishing to direct the race or serve on an organizing committee can see Mike Crowe at Saturday’s race or call him at 323-0829.

Saturday’s ramble will once again offer 5K, 10K and half marathon (21K) races with packet pickup and race day signups being held from 7-7:50 a.m.

The half-marathon starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K and 10K runs start at 8:30 a.m.
