Morristown plans sidewalk restoration

MORRISTOWN – This summer the village is planning on repairing a 140 foot section of sidewalk stretching from Citizens National Bank to the grassy hill which was formerly part of Northumberland Street.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said the village has just begun soliciting bids which are due by July 9.

Mrs. Shatraw said the sidewalk section they hope to repair is a “high traffic area.”

The project will include replacing the current sidewalk and handrail in an effort to make it safer, Mrs. Shatraw said.

The mayor also said the project is designed to make the village’s downtown more attractive to customers and potential businesses.

“We’re trying to make it look nicer for the business section,” Mrs. Shatraw said.

With the region’s cold winters and the village’s location on an exposed hill, Mrs. Shatraw said the sidewalks are susceptible to wear by ice.

As water runs down the hill, collects in the sidewalk cracks and freezes during the winter, the walkway deteriorates further, Mrs. Shatraw said.

The project is expected to be finished by the end of the summer.

Mrs. Shatraw said cost estimates are not yet available.
