Don’t favor ATVs over right to tranquility

I am writing to complain about the use of ATV’s in the town of Montague. I moved into this area in 2010, after retiring, because of its natural beauty, tranquility, and low-keyed way of life. ATV’s used Gardner Road, but there was nowhere for them to go since the state closed the Huckleberry truck trail so it became a dead end.

I have personally observed that drivers of some ATVs do not purchase permits and a few do not have license plates. I have met with the sheriff of Lewis County about my complaints, and he stated that his budget for ATV and boat patrols is severely limited and he would ask his patrol cars to come by when they could. He suggested I talk to my county legislator.

I did talk to Mr. Lucas and Mr. Pendergast, who stated the sheriff’s budget is adequate. I have addressed this situation at a county legislature meeting when they were considering opening more roads and trails in the town of Turin. All I got from others at the meeting was the question “did I know how much revenue the ATV’s brought into the county at restaurants, gas stations, and jobs?”

I know that budget from towns, counties, and the state are tight, and they are looking for new ways to boost their budgets, but where there are people like myself who don’t own ATVs and enjoy the quiet and beauty of the area, should be ignored for money.

Is there no one who sees both sides of this situation and be a champion for the common man instead of money?
