Robert Osborne Cox, age 95, Chairman of The Lauderdale Marina. Born 1917, Niagara Falls, NY, 4th child of George Emerson Cox & Frances Louise Osborne. Early schooling Watertown NY, B.S.M.E. 1940 California Institute of Technology, Registered Professional Engineer, FL. While Junior Executive New York World’s Fair 1939 married Baroness Maria Gabriella Madarassy-Beck. During WWII, service engineer for General Motors’ overseas operations and chief engineer Atlas Aircraft Products Corp. Following divorce, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale FL where he founded the Lauderdale Marina in 1948. Beginning in 1950, he was married for forty years to Virginia Phipps Clark who died in 1990. Married Georgia Inglehart Borden 1999 (died 2013). Founding member and early President Marine Industries Assoc. of Broward County, Board member & building committee Museum of Art of Ft. Lauderdale, Founding member Executive’s Assoc. of Ft Lauderdale, Chairman of City of Ft. Lauderdale Marine Advisory Board, then elected to City Commission 1969 where he served for decades. Retired after 5 years as Mayor (1991) where he was credited with promoting the city as an international boating capital and discouraging Spring Breakers, both leading to the beach front revitalization.

Summer resident on Grindstone Island, Clayton NY for nearly a century. Passed down a love of the Thousand Islands to four generations. He is survived by children William Macdonald Clark (Judy Hamilton Clark) and Thomas Riley Sundstrom (Penny Mercer Sundstrom), eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by son John Stevens Clark (Barbara Henry Clark) and Carol Clark Drum (Ted E. Drum). Founding member and first Chairman of the Antique Boat Museum Clayton NY, original member Clayton Yacht Club and member of the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT). In recent years established The Number Boat Company and Chaumont Wine & Spirits, aided in the redevelopment of the historic district of Chaumont NY and was working towards his pilot’s license.
