Computers confiscated in Potsdam court investigation

POTSDAM — State police confirmed Monday that they have seized two computers from the Potsdam Town Court in the investigation into missing money.

Investigator Timothy J. Peets of the Canton barracks said troopers collected the computers Friday afternoon. They will be analyzed by the state police Computer Crime Unit in Albany, he said.

“We don’t know the exact amount of money that is missing,” Mr. Peets said.

The state police are working in conjunction with the St. Lawrence County district attorney’s office and the state comptroller’s office in the investigation, which began with the suspension of Court Clerk Mary Jo E. Guyette about two weeks ago.

Mr. Peets said state police were requested to join the investigation by Town Judge Samuel R. Charleson.

“We’re going to wait for the comptroller’s audit to be completed and then we will continue the criminal investigation,” Mr. Peets said.

Securing the computers will help prevent any evidence from being tampered with or destroyed, Mr. Peets said.

“There are a wide variety of factors that go into the investigation,” Mr. Peets said. “How long it will take will depend on if evidence has been deleted or if it is right up front.”

Town Supervisor Marie C. Regan said Friday that she has not conversed with law enforcement officials and continued to abide by what she said was the town’s policy “not to comment on personnel matters until they are resolved.”

On Monday she said she did not realize the computers had been seized.

“It’s out of our hands now,” Mrs. Regan said.
