Baby unharmed after falling into St. Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay

ALEXANDRIA BAY — A 19-month-old baby who fell out of a boat into the St. Lawrence River Monday night was rescued and sustained no injuries.

Jefferson County emergency dispatch was called at 7:04 p.m. about the incident, and family members had rescued the baby by the time the village fire department arrived at the dock behind River Hospital on Fuller Street, Fire Chief David E. VanBrocklin said.

“The baby was living in a boat on an island, and we were told they were coming in by personal watercraft and the baby was in the water,” Mr. VanBrocklin said. “Whoever picked the baby out of the water put it in the boat and rushed it to the hospital. We helped bring the baby in at the dock and helped the doctors get it into the hospital.”

Mr. VanBrocklin could not identify the baby or family involved in the incident.

Village police and the Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service also responded. Police did not return a call Monday evening seeking comment.
