St. Lawrence Centre celebrates America’s birthday

MASSENA - Inside, St. Lawrence Centre shoppers were enjoying the mall’s Sizzling Summer Sales, while outside visitors were enjoying the mall’s annual birthday party for America.

The mall’s event included live entertainment, free bounce houses, as well as an inflatable boxing ring and jousting circle, face painting by Belly Buttons the Clown, pony rides, and equipment demonstrations by the Massena Volunteer Fire Department and Massena Volunteer Rescue Squad, as well as free child safety IDs provided by the Massena Masonic Lodge.

“We really started upping our events last year,” said St. Lawrence Centre Marketing Assistant Lindsey S. Breitbeck, adding new events this year included additional bounce houses, expanded demonstrations from the fire department and rescue squad, child safety IDs, a wine and beer garden from Vino Vidi Vici, as well as an extended fireworks display.

“Last year’s show was 30 or 40 minutes, and this year’s is going to be even better,” Ms. Breitbeck said hours before blast-off.

Ms. Breitbeck also noted that while it was hot and humid outside, at least it wasn’t raining.

“I know everyone was worried that it was going to rain, but it held off,” she said.

Ms. Breitbeck said its activities on July 3 and a good way to start the holiday celebration.

“It’s a great start to the holiday weekend,” she said, adding people who didn’t make it to the festivities will wish they did when they hear about it from their friends.

“If you didn’t come out, you really missed a great time,” she said.

Among those enjoying the celebration were Alyshia Middlemiss, 18, of Massena and her cousin, Latesha Woodard, 15, of Hogansburg.

They were among the first to try out the inflatable boxing ring facing each other while wearing oversized boxing gloves.

“The gloves were really heavy,” Ms. Middlemiss, who wore socks inside the ring ,said.

Wearing socks proved to be a mistake, as she couldn’t stay balanced on the slippery rubber surface.

When told she took have taken her socks off before entering the ring, she replied, “I know, I wish I would have thought of that.”

Ms. Woodard, who declined to declare a winner of their bout, said the time inside the ring was a great time.

“It was really fun,” she said.

Ms. Middlemiss though, acknowledged defeat, “You won, you knocked me down like four times,” she said to her cousin.
