Route 11 reopened after car crash in LeRay

A sports utility vehicle that was reported as stolen Thursday night was found ablaze early Friday on Route 11 in the town of LeRay, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said the 2004 Dodge Durango caught fire about 5 a.m. when it knocked over a National Grid utility pole onto the road, causing a second accident.

The SUV had been “entirely consumed by the fire” and the unidentified driver fled the scene before police arrived, deputies said.

Deputies said Bruce Hecker, 42, Cassville, struck the downed utility pole with his tractor-trailer but was not injured, despite being trapped in the vehicle by live power lines until National Grid shut off the power.

Route 11, between Waddingham Road and Route 26, was reopened to traffic about 10 a.m. Friday.

Deputies at the scene were assisted by the Evans Mills, Fort Drum and Calcium fire departments.

The investigation is ongoing.
