Garage sale July 19 will raise money for Mariel Barr’s cancer treatment

City residents are holding a garage sale July 19 to raised money for an Ogdensburg native who has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mariel Barr, a 2005 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy who lives in New Jersey, underwent a double mastectomy last week as part of her breast cancer treatment.

Ms. Barr was diagnosed with breast cancer in May after finding a lump, she said, and is looking at several years of treatment including five months of chemotherapy.

“This is an unfortunate situation that life has thrown at me, but it’s temporary,” she said. “It’s what I have to go through to get back to my real life.”

Laurie LaMacchia Vernsey, Ogdensburg, a high school friend of Ms. Barr, is organizing a fundraiser to help Ms. Barr get healthy and back to that real life.

Ms. Vernsey said she hopes the garage sale will help her friend cover some of the costs of her ongoing treatment.

The sale will begin at 11 a.m. in Library Park and continue until 9 p.m.

A bounce castle from Seaway Valley Jumpers will also be at the park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a photo booth will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. operated by Jacqueline Jean Photography.

Refreshments and food will be served at the sale, and Ms. Vernsey said she hopes to have live music performed as well.

“If we could all come together, we could raise hopefully a significant amount of money for her,” Ms. Vernsey said.

Anyone looking to donate items to the garage sale should contact Ms. Vernsey at (480)553-4427. Ms. Vernsey said she is hoping to get clothing and shoes in good condition, household appliances, furniture and anything else people want to contribute to the cause.

There will also be Team Mariel T-shirts, bracelets, window decals and water bottles for sale.

People who are unable to participate in the sale can contribute to Ms. Barr’s recovery by donating online at

“There is no magic wand in my future, but I’m just taking it one day at a time,” Ms. Barr said. “With the love and support that I have, I know I can get through this.”
