Frederick Bean reappointed to the Ogdensburg Board of Education

Despite losing his re-election bid in May, Frederick P. Bean was reappointed to the Ogdensburg City School Board of Education at Monday’s meeting.

Mr. Bean had lost his seat to James P. King. He received 198 votes compared to 310 for Mr. King.

He was reappointed following the resignation of school board member Betty J. Mallott last month for health reasons.

Mrs. Mallott, who had served on the board for nine years, said her doctor had advised her to cut back on stress-inducing activities.

The board decided against holding a special election or leaving the seat vacant at the June meeting and board Vice President Michael J. Tooley recommended reappointing Mr. Bean.

Mr. Bean said at the June meeting he would be “very happy” to accept an appointment.

Monday’s board meeting was also the first time Mr. King officially participated in the proceedings. Mr. King was the only board member to vote against the reappointment of Mr. Bean.

“I was just trying to represent the people that put me in,” Mr. King said.

Mr. Bean could not be reached for comment.

Mr. King said he hopes to move on and get down to the business of educating the district’s students now that Mr. Bean has been reappointed.

“Let’s move on,” he said. “Let’s get the work done that needs to get done. I’m looking forward to working with everyone on the board.”

In other board action Monday, Ronald N. Johnson was elected president of the board, replacing Mr. Bean, who previously held that position. Mr. Tooley was re-elected as vice president.
