North Lawrence man attempts to open log furniture store


MASSENA - A North Lawrence man hopes to begin selling log furniture later this summer out of a long vacant building on South Main Street that once housed an Agway store.

John L. Gardner, 53, of North Lawrence said he has had a long-time dream of opening a retail business. He said he will be at the July 10 village planning board meeting seeking site plan approval to sell log furniture and antique furniture at 528 South Main Street, The building, owned by Tim Alguire, is located in a Commercial Transition District zone.

Mr. Gardner will be leasing the building and expects to have two people working with him at the planned Massena Marketplace and Homecraft Furniture. He said he also hopes to have other vendors selling antiques as well as used and new items at the store as well.

“It will be year round. We are hoping to open around the first of August. We are still looking for vendors,” Mr. Gardner said.

He is looking to start with 20-25 vendors, and eventually expand that number since he has enough spots for 60 vendors.

“I plan on going to the meeting on the 10th of July. We are going to work on the building, turn the power on next week hopefully, a lot of cleaning up to do. By the 15th of July, we should be able to put vendors in and be ready for the first of August,” Mr. Gardner said.

The North Lawrence native is looking forward to the opportunity to accomplish something he has wanted to do for quite a while.

“We’re selling used stuff, antique furniture. I’ve been wanting to do this for many years, selling stuff for the public,” Mr. Gardner said.

“It’s all log furniture that I’ve made. I’ve been doing log furniture for four years. I’ve been building cedar log furniture and cabinets.”

The building, which last housed Murphy’s Farm & Garden Supply, has 2,500 square feet of retail space in the front of the structure and another 3,200 square feet in the back that had been used for storage by the building’s previous tenants.
