Rams hit road after home loss

The Watertown Rams will have to wait for a while to give their fans another home win.

The Amsterdam Mohawks rallied twice and used a four-run seventh inning to defeat Watertown, 9-4, in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game on Sunday at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds. Rams manager Paul Alteri wanted to give the fans a win before Watertown goes on a six-game road trip that starts Tuesday at Boonville.

“We would’ve like to have played better for the fans today and especially for ourselves,” Alteri said. “It’s our last home game before we hit the road and it didn’t turn out the way we liked to.”

Watertown, which will be on the road because the 196th Jefferson County Fair is scheduled all week for the fairgrounds, is 14-13 and in first place in the PGCBL West Division by one game over Elmira. Alteri knows the next six games are critical in the divisional race.

Alteri said, “If we can come out with a 4-2 or better record, I’ll be happy with that.”

Reliever Christian Bartholomew earned the win by pitching two shutout innings, and Devin Wenzel clubbed a solo home run over the left field wall in the sixth to tie the game at four before Amsterdam (14-13) belted out four hits in the seventh for its four additional runs. Mohawks manager Keith Griffin said the big inning was key.

“We got three or four hits in a row which was a much-needed pick-me-up,” Griffin said. “We’ve not been doing that the whole year.”

Rams starting pitcher and former Immaculate Heart Central product Anthony Magovney (University of Buffalo) fared better this time against the Mohawks, going six innings and giving up four runs on four hits. The last time Magovney pitched against Amsterdam on June 25, he lasted only 2 1/3 innings and surrendered nine runs on nine hits to take the loss in a 17-0 defeat.

“I just felt my mechanics were much better,” Magovney said.

Watertown raced out to a 3-0 lead after three innings before Amsterdam tied it with a three-run fourth inning. The Rams went back on top in the fourth thanks to a Bobby Indeglia RBI-single that plated Collin Theroux. The Mohawks then tied the game on Wenzel’s first homer of the season.

“I kind of hit it high in the air and I saw the kid (Indeglia) going back on it,” Wenzel said. “I thought he had a chance to rob me, but it carried just enough.”

Amsterdam also received a pair of doubles and an RBI by John Nogowski, who came off the bench in the seventh. Nogowski said he his mind-set stays the same no matter the situation.

“I try not to change it too much.” he said. “I just want to come in and make a difference.”

Henry McAree took the loss by giving up the four runs, all unearned, in the seventh.

The tandem of Bartholomew and Chris Kalica held the Rams scoreless after starter Matt Snyder was lifted at the start of the sixth. Coach Griffin thought his relievers helped settle the team down.

“I thought Bartholomew was real calming when he got out there, and Kalica’s been good,” Griffin said.
