Bogosian throws support behind Massena Boys & Girls Club

MASSENA - Professional hockey player and Massena’s hometown hero Zach Bogosian has thrown his support behind efforts to establish the Boys & Girls Club of Massena.

“I’m honored to help however I can,” the 22-year-old Winnipeg Jets defenseman said this week when he eagerly accepted the role of celebrity spokesperson.

“We need the programs and opportunities for the kids of our community that this club will provide. I know how hard work, supportive adults and great programs can help you achieve what you want to in life. You’re not going to achieve great things without dreaming it and working towards it. It’s nothing that the world is going to hand to you – and, really, it feels so much better when you know you have earned it,” he said.

“The Boys & Girls Club will provide the programs and support structure that will help the kids of our community be great. Every kid has a chance to do great things but it takes work and getting the doors of the Boys & Girls Club open is what we, as a community, need to get behind to make a reality,” Bogosian added.

To help raise awareness and funds toward the establishment of the club, Bogosian will be participating in events whenever his NHL schedule allows, speaking out about the importance of getting kids active and is really looking forward to paying visits to the club once it is open to hang out with the members – maybe play some floor hockey or a game of hoops.

“It’s so great to have someone like Zach want to join us in our efforts to make this club a reality. What he believes in – hard work, supportive adults and proven programs to help you achieve your goals – are all embodied in what a Boys & Girls Club provides,” said Timmy Currier, president of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Massena.

The announcement comes as the non-profit formally begins the public outreach portion of its “Campaign for Kids: The Foundation of our Future” that will help raise the necessary funds to establish and maintain the club in the community.

“We know the amount we need to raise is not small, but the importance is great,” Currier said. “There is no doubt in my mind that we can secure the funds we need. If those individuals, organizations and businesses who opened up their hearts and their wallets in support of other worthy causes in Massena come through for the community again, we will be opening our ‘big blue’ club doors in May, for sure.”

The first fundraising event that Bogosian will participate in is the inaugural Backyard BBQ to Benefit the Boys & Girls Club, slated for July 27. The intent of the event in future years will be a celebration of the key donors of the Club; but, this first year will focus on informing invited guests about the club, its funding needs and lining up commitments of support.

The “house party” format for the Backyard BBQ includes hosting at a local home with live music, local catering and an available cash bar. With only a limited number of spaces available, the guest list will include invitees recommended by Bogosian and members of the capital campaign committee, with the balance available to the public through a silent auction.

To submit your request to be added to the guest list, please email the names of your attendees and your bid amount to prior to July 19.

Other events tentatively planned include a “Run, Roll, Walk, Skip for the Boys & Girls Club” in September to help raise awareness, funds and “get active” with the kids of our community in connection with the annual National Day for Kids; Boys & Girls Club Week; a Boys and Girls Club Hockey Tournament each summer featuring Bogosian playing (and coaching); and, much more.

“Zach’s involvement will be tremendous for our fundraising efforts. But, even greater than that will be the positive impact he will have for the kids who will come to the club when we open the doors next May,” Currier noted. “Zach is a role model that our kids can look up to and emulate while showing them that celebrities are real people. We are just so grateful for his willingness to be a part of this important effort.”

Boys & Girls Club of Massena is dedicated to ensuring that our community’s young people, who are most in need of our help, have greater access to quality programs and services that help them succeed academically, live healthy lifestyles and become leaders.

With a goal of opening its doors in May 2014, the Boys & Girls Club of Massena will provide children with a positive place to go, results-oriented programming and a professional staff to guide them.

A private, nonprofit organization, Boys & Girls Club of Massena ( will improve young lives as well as the communities that surround and support us. The organization’s success in serving those who need us depends upon the gracious support of private, corporate, individual and grant funding to fill the gap between very modest membership dues and operational expenses.
