Morristown dedicates renovated boat launch to the late Rep. Martin

MORRISTOWN – The renovated Morristown Municipal Boat Launch was dedicated to the late Congressman David O’Brien Martin at a ceremony on Saturday.

Mayor Cheryl A. Shatraw said the decision to name the boat launch after Mr. Martin was based on his work for the region, noting that he spent many summers in Morristown and has family in the area.

Mr. Martin, born in April 1944, served in the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1993. He died in Nov. 2012.

Russell B. Lawrence, who nominated Mr. Martin for the honor, said the dedication ceremony, which was attended by members of Mr. Martin’s family, was “very nice.”

Mr. Lawrence said the plaque, fixed to a Morristown rock by the boat launch, has been fitted with a Quick Response Code which allows it to be read by smartphones.

“You can take your QR reader on the smart phone and get a whole bunch of information about David and his life and the region,” Mr. Lawrence said.

The village boat launch renovations were completed earlier this summer. Work on the $104,000 project began in February.

The launch is located off Water Street and faces Morristown Bay.

The new launch has two lanes, separated by a floating dock, said Mrs. Shatraw, which will allow it to rise and fall with the water level in the St. Lawrence River.

In addition to the dock, the renovations extended the launch 50 feet into the water to better enable boaters to access their boats when the water is low.

“It’s been unbelievable how much it’s been used during the summer already,” Mrs. Shatraw said of the boat launch. “If you drive down there any day you’ll see a number of boats and trailers.”
