Morristown to pay substitutes better to be more competitive

MORRISTOWN – The Morristown Central School District will be compensating substitute teachers better this year in an attempt to find willing people to fill-in when teachers are out.

The board of education voted unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting to raise the rate for certified substitute teachers from $75 to $85 per day.

Non-certified substitute teachers will still be eligible for $65.

Board Member Mark R. Tayler said the old pay was “insulting” for those who had been certified.

The board had tabled discussion of raising the daily rate last year, Board President Cyril H. Aldrich Jr. noted, adding that he was supportive of the increase.

Principal O. Michael Wills said the school has struggled to find substitutes “almost every day” over the past year thanks to the lower rate.

“When you’re subbing, if you get two phone calls, whoever has the higher per diem – that’s where you’re going to go,” Superintendent David J. Glover said.

Mr. Aldrich said raising the rate to $85 will make them more competitive in the region.

Mr. Wills said it will “definitely” improve the district’s ability to find help when they need it.

The board of education also reappointed Mr. Aldrich as president of the board and W. Darrell Merkel as vice president.

Larry Kring was sworn in as the newest member of the board.

Mr. Kring replaced his wife, Jane A. Kring, who opted not to seek re-election in this year’s election.
