CANTON - Electrical power was restored at about 10:20 a.m. to most National Grid customers affected by an outage of more than an hour that wascaused by an animal, possibly a squirrel, that blew a transformer on Miner Street.

More than 2,000 people in the town and village of Canton were without power this morning.

In the town of Canton, but outside the village, nearly half of the 1,991 customers were without power. In the village, more than 70 percent of customers were affected.

The outage also continued into the neighboring town of Pierrepont, where a smaller percentage of customers, 312 out of 1,255, were reported without power.

A National Grid spokeswoman at 10:45 a.m. said all customers had their power restored except for St. Lawrence University.
