The Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club Advanced Training Technology and Information Network Lab will remain open thanks to a $150,000 grant obtained by Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton.

The program, run by the State University of New York, had been put on a list of centers scheduled to be shut down, Mrs. Ritchie said.

After meeting with leaders in the ATTAIN program Mrs. Ritchie learned the program needed $150,000 to continue operating for the next year and began looking for the money.

Thomas P. Luckie, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said the grant will keep the program running for the next year, providing services such as pre-General Educational Development classes and job training to members of the community.

“It’s so important for the community,” Mr. Luckie said.

The lab, located at the Boys and Girls Club at 610 Patterson St., is home to 16 computers and a smart board, Mr. Luckie said.

“We’re fortunate because our kids use it during the afternoons and the evenings for educational opportunities,” he added.

Mrs. Ritchie said the program is crucial for cities like Ogdensburg.

“Anything that has to do with putting people back to work is a priority for me,” she said.

Mr. Luckie said the money will go to paying the one staff member employed by the program as well as licensing fees and upgrades to the lab.

Mrs. Ritchie said she will be meeting with SUNY officials over the course of the next year to ensure it is not closed in the next round of budget deliberations.
