Alex Hayes of the Ogdensburg Maples waited the whole game for Norfolk pitcher Cody Smith to throw him a fastball in Fridays 19U Baseball action at Father Martin Park.
And when he finally got some heat from the crafty Rovers hurler, the Canton Central junior made the most of the situation stroking a two-out walk-off single to give the Maples a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.
That is the way it has gone for us so far this summer. A lot of people stepping up to get key hits or key outs, said Maples Coach Steve LaRose after his team stayed undefeated on the summer season.
Alex Hayes got a big hit for us tonight and having Breton LaRose on the mound at the end of games has been huge. He has pitched in eight games so far.
LaRose struck out four pitching scoreless sixth and seventh innings and picked up the victory on a night when Geoff Baldwin started and Hayes and Jordan Miller preceeded LaRose in relief roles in a combined five-hitter.
We have the two Montreal teams in here on Saturday and Sunday for doubleheaders (noon starts both days) and we have several players going to a weekend basketball camp, said LaRose.
So we will need all of our pitchers so I spotted different people tonight and they all pitched well. And Cody Smith threw a great game for them.
Smith struck out six pitching a complete game for the Rovers and singled in a two-run first inning and lined an RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Trailing 3-1 the Maples rallied for two runs in the sixth on singles by Seth Pinkerton and Bryant Wentworth and a two-run single by Lefty Arsenault.
In the bottom of the seventh Pat Cosmo and Jordan Miller drew one-out walks. Cosmo took third as Baldwin beat a Rovers attempt to turn their second infield double play of the game and Hayes followed with his game-winning single.
Wentworth finished with two singles and scored two runs and Kinnon LaRose delivered an RBI single in the first inning.
Isaiah Dillabough (2 singles), Smith and Brandon Noble (RBI) all singled in the two-run first inning for the Rovers.
