POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central School District Board of Education may soon have another member.

Board of Education member Frederick C. Stone Jr. suggested adding a non-voting student representative to the board.

“They’re grumbling,” he said, referring to the district’s student body. “I would like to see them have some input.”

Mr. Stone said he feels it wouldn’t only be beneficial for board members to hear the students’ point of view, but for students to have a liaison on the board to provide them with accurate information about what it going on at board meetings.

“They’re hearing things, and they’re not accurate,” he said. “I think a lot of what students hear is coming from other students and their parents who might not be informed.”

Superintendent Patrick H. Brady said he thought the idea was a good one. “I think that has some merit,” he said.

High school Principal Joann Chambers agreed. “I think it’s an excellent idea,” she said. “I think the more engaged students are in school the more happy and productive they are.”

Long-time board of education member Ralph L. Fuller said the board at one point did have a student representative. “We did that in the past, but our meetings were too long ,and they got discouraged,” he said.

To help combat that, Mr. Stone said the board’s agenda’s could be reorganized so that items pertinent to students were discussed earlier in the meeting.

In addition to not having a formal vote, the student board representative would not attend executive sessions.
