The city council voted on Monday to remove the two-hour time limit on parking on the south side of King Street between Mansion and Albany Avenue.

The new regulations will come into effect next week Mayor William D. Nelson said.

Currently parking is restricted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Mr. Nelson said the parking regulations were originally put in place when Dr. Vijayasimha Kotha was practicing medicine at 312 King St.

“[Dr. Kotha] had asked for the timed parking so his patients could come in,” Mr. Nelson said.

“He had very little to no off-street parking,” Mr. Nelson said, “so they had nowhere to go.”

Dr. Kotha no longer has a practice on King Street.

The section of street affected by the new regulations is residential but located near the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. There is no parking permitted on the north side of the street.

Although the area is residential Mr. Nelson said he isn’t concerned about congestion.
