A missing dog, a desperate family and a caring Chaumont community

It is with the deepest most heartfelt appreciation that I write this letter. While staying at our family camp in Chaumont, we had the most unfortunate experience of losing track of one of our pets. While out on what should have been a typical walk with our four dogs, our three-legged rescue mutt, Trooper, came up missing.

We searched all afternoon on June 29, until well after dark with no results. Our search resumed the next day at 5 a.m. My many thanks to the businesses in Chaumont and the individuals we came into contact with that offered their support and kind words. We were even fortunate enough to have a couple volunteer and help in our search. The heartbeat of a small town truly is in the kindness and sincerity of the people. Chaumont shines with that vibe and we thank you.

Through the grace of God we were able to locate our dog. He had fallen into an old abandoned well and was approximately 12 feet beneath ground. His cries would have gone undetected had we not taken that last desperate trek through the overgrown fields. Unable to safely rescue him ourselves, a call went out to 911. Fire Chief Fred Jackson and assistant Ben Bach of the Chaumont Volunteer Fire Department arrived within minutes of the call. With calm certainty they assured us that, yes, they would most definitely save our dog.

With confidence and professionalism they set about the task, and shortly after, our dog was safe.

I thank you both, Fred and Ben, for being our heroes of the day. Your dedication and the sacrifices you make every single day as volunteers are truly appreciated. Words cannot express the gratitude felt for your absolute selflessness. I tip my hat to you.

I urge all to support your local fire deparment. Donate, join, volunteer, whatever you can offer. Should you ever need them, they are there for you without hesitation or a second thought. It’s who they are, it’s what they do and it’s these individuals that make small town America a great place to live. God Bless all who volunteer, in whatever capacity, and God Bless Chaumont volunteer fire department.
