CARTHAGE The Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce recently discussed an upcoming concert and reviewed the success of its holiday fireworks display.
The chamber will host the River Rat Rhythm Project Steel Drum Band from 7 to 9 p.m. July 31. The event, sponsored by Slack Chemical, will be held in the Farmers Market pavilion on Riverside Drive and Calvary Assembly of God will distribute popcorn. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and remember that village law bans dogs from public events.
The River Rat Steel Band is one of the most popular ones from the concert series, chamber President Teri L. Ellis said.
The chamber received the donation of a tent from the Carthage Free Library. The tent had been used for the summer reading program; however with recent expansion, the tent no longer is needed. Mrs. Ellis expressed thanks to the library board during the chamber meeting.
She also recapped the July 6 fireworks celebration. It was a good show and we had a record crowd, probably 1,000 people, she said, noting people came from great distances to see the show and the vendors had a good flow of customers.
Board of directors member Derek Davis suggested adding to the fireworks to enhance the show.
Mrs. Ellis said that would be taken under consideration, as well as having the display on July 12, a week later, next year.
The chamber is preparing to send a care package as part of its adopt-a-platoon program. Anyone wishing to contribute should drop off items at the chamber office, 120 S. Mechanic St., by July 31. Items sought include dried fruit, non-meltable candy, protein powder, chips, salsa, homemade cookies or Rice Krispie treats and hygiene products such as bath towels, nail clippers, razors, loofahs, deodorant or after-shave. Call the chamber office at 493-3590 for more information.
