BURKE - As entries for the recent childrens art show at the Almanzo Wilder Homestead came from St. Lawrence, Franklin, and Clinton counties, so did the winners as selected by artists Carol Ganthier and Donna Smith.
Winning entries are:
Pencil/charcoal: First ,Margaret Wallace, Lawrence Avenue Elementary, Potsdam; Second, Alex Burg, St. Lawrence Central; Third, Chloe Kelly, St. Lawrence Central.
Colored pencil: First, Deven Perusic; Second, Abigayle Hicks-Lemza (also selected as the Peoples Choice); Third, Hailey Letourneau. All winning entries in this category are from Rouses Point Elementary.
Pastel: First, Aiden Decillis, Davis Elementary(Malone); Second, Olivia Franz, Holy Family (Malone); Third, Alyvia Fleury, Davis Elementary.
Crayon/Marker: First, Lauren Brilotti, Rouse Point Elementary; Second, Christy Patnode, Chateaugay Central; Third, Braydon Feiman, Chateaugay Central.
For the first time in memory, students from the same class in the same school swept the essay contest of the Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder Association. Jack Gero was named 2013 Honorary Almanzo Wilder; his classmate Lauren Brilotti was named 2013 Honorary Laura Ingalls.
Their essays on A Day in My Life, depicting life at the time of Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder, were chosen as best by the Education Committee. The classmates, who were in a fourth-grade class at Rouses Point Elementary for the past school year, are slated to participate in several events at the Almanzo Wilder Homestead in Burke.
Their first appearance in period costume was during the recent Childrens Art Gala. Jack and Lauren were introduced between sets of Adirondack Harper Martha Gallagher, along with announcements of art show winners and recognition of all art show entries which underwent a selection process at their schools to be entered at the show.
In addition, alternates to the essay contest were announced. First alternate for Almanzo is Kyle Mitchell, a student at Holy Family School. First alternate Laura is Jillian Fitchette, a student at Davis Elementary. Second alternate Almanzo is Bryce Braley of Flanders Elementary (Malone). Second alternate Laura is Leah Lacey of Momot Elementary (Plattsburgh). Alternates would be contacted in the event Jack and/or Lauren were unable to participate in the remaining events: Schoolhouse dedication on Aug. 24; Harvest Festival and Civil War Camp, Sept. 28; and Christmas with Almanzo, Dec. 1.
