State offers tips to stay cool during heat wave

Temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s across New York this week, and the governor’s office offered the following tips to stay cool:

n Slow down on strenuous activity and exercise, especially during the sun’s peak hours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exercise in the early morning between 4 and 7 a.m.

n Eat less protein and more fruits and vegetables; protein produces and increases metabolic heat, which can cause water loss. Eat small meals, but eat more often. Avoid salty foods.

n Drink at least two to four glasses of water an hour during extreme heat. Avoid beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.

n If possible, stay out of the sun and stay in air conditioning.

n Wear sunscreen with a high sun protector factor rating (at least SPF 15) and a hat to protect your face and head.
