ASSAULT - MASSENA - Village polic charged Joseph Belile29, of 3 Irish Settlement Road, Constable, formerly of Massena, with third-degree assault at 10:56 p.m. Tuesday following an investigation into an incident that took place earlier in the evening at 2 Willow St., Apt. 304.

Belile allegedly punched his girlfriend, Sarah Gauthier, in the mouth. Gauthier reportedly suffered several lacreations and complained of pain. She also told police she became disoriented and dizzy after she was struck in the face.

Belile was held overnight in the village lockup and was arraigned Wednesday afternoon by Acting Massena Village Justice James M. Crandall. Despite his vociferous protests, Belile was sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $500 cash or $1,000 bond.

Ms. Gauthier told police she and Belile got in an argument over a “bunch of stupid things” at approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday, and he left her apartment. She said a while later she decided to visit people in another apartment in her building and noticed that everybody seemed to be acting weird when she entered the apartment.

She said she followed Josh Dion into his bedroom to ask him what was going on and discovered her boyfriend was hiding behind the door. “Then he came out yelling for me to leave. Joe was accusing me of telling people he was gay,” Ms. Gauthier noted in the statement she provided police.

She said she swatted Gauthier away when he pushed her backwards, and he countered by punching her in the face. She said he also threatened her family during the incident. “Joe told me if I were to have him arrested when he got out he would kill my family,” she noted in her statement.
