Alex Bay golf and paddle fundraisers to be held July 26 and 27

ALEXANDRIA BAY — The Foundation for Community Betterment will host two fundraisers next week to benefit River Hospital’s River Community Wellness Program, Alexandria Community Thrift Store and a local family.

The fifth annual Golf for Betterment will be held July 26 at the village’s municipal golf course on Old Goose Bay Road.

The tee-off times will be 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration starts an hour before tee off.

The $45 per person registration fee also includes a cart, lunch and a pizza reception. Prizes will be awarded at 5:30 p.m. at Top of the Bay on James Street.

For more information on the golf fundraiser, call Mary Lou Williams at 836-5452.

On July 27, the foundation will host its 13th annual Paddle for Betterment.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the village park beach and the group will leave at 9 a.m.

If the participant is bringing his or her own boat, the fee will be $40 — including breakfast — per adult and $25 per child.

People also can sponsor a child to participate for $50 or join the “500 Club” by making a tax-deductible donation of $500.

The group is also seeking young volunteers to sell lemonade and lemons with prizes in them at Big M on Route 12.

To volunteer, call Lisa Slate at 482-4533 or Heather McKinnon-Heath at 482-3171.

Proceeds from the events also will benefit the Fowler family of Alexandria Bay.

Diane Fowler, a former nurse at River Hospital, suffered a stroke and is confined to a wheelchair. The Foundation for Community Betterment will be providing flooring material for the Fowler residence, so she can navigate around the house in her wheelchair, and pay the Fowlers’ mortgage for a couple of months, the foundation said.
