Patient arrested in psych center stabbing

CANTON — An arrest has been made in the Monday stabbing of a St. Lawrence psychiatric Center staffer.

Ogdensburg City Police arrested James Earl Davison, 25 of Ward 94, 1 Chimney Point Drive, Ogdensburg Wednesday.

Mr. Davison was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both class D felonies.

City police responded to the report of a stabbing that had occurred at the psych center’s Trinity Building on Monday at 12:33 p.m.

According to a press release from Detective Sgt. Robert H. Wescott, when officers arrived, the male victim, who is a therapy aide employed by the psych center, was being treated by an on-duty nurse for a stab wound to the face. The victim was subsequently taken by the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad to the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center’s emergency room for treatment of a stab wound that fully penetrated the left cheek. The victim was treated and released.

The attack on the staff member occurred in the dining room area as lunch was finishing. The victim was stabbed with butter knife. After completing the investigation, the Psychiatric Center’s Public Safety Department was called on to assist in the arrest due to the suspect’s in-patient status.

Mr. Davison was arrested at 9:34 a.m. Wednesday at the city police department then taken to city court for arraignment.

The weapon charge is a felony due to a previous conviction.

Mr. Davison was arraigned before Judge William R. Small and sent back into the custody of the Office of Mental Hygiene with the condition that $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond will be instituted if released from the Psychiatric Center.

An order of protection was issued on behalf of the victim. Mr. Davison is due back in court on July 22.
