High costs delay Norwood school cleanup

NORWOOD — Plans to clear debris from the site of the former Norwood Elementary School have been delayed because of price estimates that were more than three times higher than expected.

The school was burned down in a suspected arson fire in 2009. After lengthy legal wrangling that led to the village taking control of the property from the former owners, about half of the debris from the fire was removed last year, for about $21,000.

Village leaders were hoping to match that price for the second phase of cleanup, but the lowest bid was $68,000.

The village is looking at its options and hopes to return to the project soon, Mayor James H. McFaddin said.

“It’s going to happen. It’s a great piece of a property, but it’s more than we’re willing to commit,” he said.
