Lewis DSS commissioner interviews set for Friday

LOWVILLE — Lewis County legislators are set to interview four candidates for commissioner of social services today.

The group will include Commissioner Stacy L. Alvord, whose five-year term expires in the fall, according to legislative Social Services Committee Chairman William J. Burke, R-West Lowville.

Mr. Burke on Monday asked as many lawmakers as possible to participate in the interviews.

The committee chose to advertise for the position, as it did five years ago, then readvertised after Mrs. Alvord was the only one of four initial applicants to meet Civil Service requirements.

Lowville resident Carmen A. Sweet, at a meeting a couple of weeks ago, urged legislators to reappoint Mrs. Alvord, commending her for handling a large case load increase without added staff.

In 2008, lawmakers chose not to reappoint then-Commissioner Penny A. LaBarge for a second term and hired Mrs. Alvord instead.
