Hammond Central fires superintendent

HAMMOND — The Hammond Central School District superintendent has been fired for “poor job performance.”

Douglas H. McQueer was fired by the school board July 10, a day after he was reappointed as superintendent at the school board’s July 9 meeting.

The seven-member school board unanimously approved the firing in a 15-minute executive session after Mr. McQueer’s reappointment.

School Board President Timothy W. Pitcher said he could not disclose details from the board’s executive session, but said the reason for the firing is “ongoing issues concerning job performance” and poor evaluation scores.

“We checked all avenues and talked to the BOCES superintendent about our options before taking action,” Mr. Pitcher said.

St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services Superintendent Thomas R. Burns, who serves as a consultant for the state, said the board is in talks to hire Mr. McQueer’s replacement.

“We’re going to try to set up a meeting in the next week or two to discuss securing the services of an interim superintendent and talk about a time line for a search for a permanent superintendent,” Mr. Burns said.

Mr. Pitcher said Mr. McQueer agreed to serve on the staff until the termination of his contract July 30.

The decision came during contract negotiations, Mr. Pitcher said.

“Nobody likes for this to happen, especially under a philosophical disagreement for the future of leadership,” Mr. Burns said. “I credit both sides for keeping the students in mind.”

Mr. McQueer has served the district as superintendent for seven years and as a math teacher for 11 years.
