Local auto racing: Dunn’s busy schedule pays off

Billy Dunn could be called the “travelin’ man” when it comes to dirt auto racing.

The Watertown native competes weekly at the Canandaigua and Mohawk International speedways. He has been on a hot streak recently, winning four out of the past five 358-modified features at the Mohawk track in Akwesasne.

“I drive a car owned by Laurent Ladouceur, a former driver at Mohawk, who now races at the Cornwall (Ontario) Speedway,” Dunn said earlier this week. “We’ve picked up where we left off at the Mohawk Raceway.”

Dunn won six features there a year ago and is the defending track champion in his division. After the weekly races on Friday nights, Dunn stops back to his shop and gets his big-block modified car that he owns ready for Saturday night racing in Canandaigua.

“I have two wins there this season, and I am in second place in the points,” he said.

Dunn also competes in the big-block modified Super Dirt Series. He’s currently in fifth place in the points.

“I was leading the Cornwall series race recently when a parts failure forced me to drop out of the feature,” Dunn said. “I finished second last week in the small-block modified series race at Saratoga.”

Dunn will compete in both modified divisions again this season during Super DIRT Week in October at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

“I finished second in the small-block race at 10th in the big block race at Syracuse a year ago,” Dunn said.

While the races in Syracuse are weeks away, Dunn expects to start working on his Syracuse car with his crew before the end of the month.

Super DIRT Week is scheduled for Oct. 9-13 at the Syracuse Fairgrounds in Syracuse.

The highlight of the week is the 200-mile big-block modified feature on Oct. 13, when the pro stock championship will also take place. On Oct. 12, the 150-lap 358-modified title race will be decided along with the sportsman modified feature.

Stewart places 12th

NASCAR’s Tony Stewart finished 12th Wednesday night in a sprint-car race at Fulton Speedway. Lance Dewease won the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) race. Stewart Friesen placed second.
