Health advisory: avoid algae blooms in Butterfield Lake

REDWOOD — The Jefferson County Public Health Service has issued a blue-green algae advisory for Butterfield Lake near the hamlet of Redwood in the town of Alexandria.

Officials warn that these microscopic organisms can cause skin or eye irritation, or diarrhea and vomiting if ingested. People and animals should avoid contact with any algae blooms, scum and colored water, they said.

Blue-green algae — or cyanobacteria — can become abundant in warm, shallow, undisturbed surface water that receives a lot of sunlight.

The Public Health Service also is asking people to rinse with clean water if exposed to the algae and seek medical attention if they develop symptoms that may be associated with exposure to blue-green algae blooms.
