Thousand Islands tourism spending boosts in 2012, according to study

Tourism spending in the Thousand Islands region climbed by 5.4 percent from 2011 to 2012, from $455,931,000 to $480,591,000, according to a study recently published by Tourism Economics, a Philadelphia-based consulting firm.

Businesses in the region’s tourism industry employed a total of 8,896 people in 2012, who earned a collective $204,203,000.

Tourism spending accounted for $26,375,000 in state taxes and $32,441,000 in local taxes. Tourism spending has consistently increased in the region since 2010, when spending was $431,002,000.

Tourism spending buoyed in every region of New York state in 2012, according to the study. That widespread growth boosted the state’s overall tourism by 6.2 percent, and traveler spending set a record of $57.3 billion. Tourism is the most important in the Adirondacks and Catskills region, the study concluded, accounting for 18 and 15 percent of total employment, respectively.
