Food Stamp recipients receive added benefits at farmers markets

Participants in the SNAP/EBT food stamp program who use their benefits at the Canton, Potsdam, Gouverneur, and Massena farmers markets, and Martin’s Farmstand off of Route 11B in Potsdam, will receive an additional $5 for every $10 they spend through funding provided by GardenShare supporters and the state Fresh Connect Farmers Market program.

“Basically every food stamp dollar is worth a dollar and a half at these local markets this season,” Aviva Gold, GardenShare executive director, said in a statement.

EBT users who make it to the markets at least five times this summer will receive an additional $20 to spend.

Shoppers can use SNAP/EBT benefits to buy fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, dairy, maple syrup and other maple products, honey, breads, baked goods, jams and jellies, processed foods, and seeds and plants that produce food.
