Big Drum wins Children’sDerby

Robert Downey III only caught one fish at Saturday’s Ogdensburg Seaway Festival Children’s Fishing Derby at the Greenbelt Docks.

But it created lifetime excitement as he hauled in a 23” Freshwater Drum to claim top honors.

“The fish just stopped his pole dead. We had a real battle getting it in,” said the young angler’s dad Robert Downey Jr. “It was his only fish but a what a fish. We had never seen that kind of fish before”

Rounding out the top six who received trophies and new bicycles were: Sharon Szfranski with a 18” smallmouth bass, Mark Barr with a nice Walleye, Merrick Jackson with a 13” bass and Weston Bouchey and last year’s winner Maddox Haynes with bullheads.

Luke Whiteford won the Oddest Catch Award for landing a string of zebra mussels and Ella Bateman earned the Sportsmanship Award.

Angel Maroney and Julie Hooper coordinated the event which presented each child with a momento and members of the St. Lawrence Valley Sportsman Club handled the weigh-in duties and provided worms as bait for all of the anglers.
