Lyme Community Foundation to auction away vintage street lamps

CHAUMONT — The Lyme Community Foundation will auction vintage street lamps Thursday as part of a fundraiser to support the nonprofit foundation’s various activities.

The event, which celebrates local artwork and north country history, begins with a reception at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Alexander Copley House on Route 12E.

Lamp tops and posts of nearly 20 old iron street lamps will be auctioned off separately that night.

Karen M. Donahue, Lyme Central’s superintendent who also serves on the foundation’s Executive Committee, said one of the street lamps has been transformed into a piece of art for the auction by a mosaic artist from Pulaski.

The Lyme Community Foundation had reached out to area artists this spring to commission the work and selected Jennifer King’s design.

Her work also will be showcased at the event.

The cast iron lamp tops up for auction are 2 feet tall — with eight 13-inch-tall window panes — and the cast iron posts are 9 feet tall. These street lamps had formerly lit the neighborhoods of Watertown, according to the foundation.

Mel Busler of WWNY-TV7 will be the guest auctioneer.

In addition to maintaining the Alexander Copley House and its grounds as a community center for educational programs, the foundation publishes a newsletter — the Lyme Light — provides scholarships to Lyme Central students and hosts various community events.

Tickets for the fundraiser will cost $15 at the door. To make a reservation, contact Nancy Villa at 649-2172.
