Tourism spending in the Thousand Islands region climbed by 5.4 percent from 2011 to 2012 — from $455,931,000 to $480,591,000 — according to a study recently published by Tourism Economics, a Philadelphia-based consulting firm.

Businesses in the region’s tourism industry in 2012 employed 8,896 people, who earned $204,203,000. Tourism spending brought in $26,375,000 in state taxes and $32,441,000 in local taxes. Tourism spending in the region has increased since 2010, when spending was $431,002,000.

Tourism spending jumped in every region of the state in 2012, according to the study. That growth boosted the state’s overall tourism by 6.2 percent, and traveler spending set a record at $57.3 billion. Tourism is the most important industry in the Adirondacks, accounting for 18 percent of total employment, the study concluded.
